He's Home

Our pain-in-the-butt has returned! The vet called yesterday morning to say that Achilles was a new puppy, and that we could pick him up.

Considering just how bad off he was, I honestly wasn't too sure that he would make it. Wednesday he went in, and really didn't look like he would make it through the next day.

Thursday they called to say he was doing much better than the day before. They planned to give him food and water. (something he hadn't taken in days)

Friday he was his same "retard-happy" self (that is what Denny calls him). Sophie wasted no time climbing on, running over, poking, and riding him around the apartment. Even Denny was happy Achilles was home. *GASP* Denny hates dogs almost as much as I hate cats.

I'm glad I ignored my Mexican instincts that just told me to put the dog down and save the money. He was worth it.

Sigh

Why world? WHY?

Monday I noticed that Achilles wasn't really himself. He didn't get super excited when I went to let him out in the morning, he didn't run all over the apartment with Sophie, and he didn't eat much.

Tuesday he didn't eat at all, or even move. In the evening he threw up a round worm. So we bought de-wormer.

This morning he pooped pure blood. So off to the vet we went.
Not only does he have round worms (which is easy to treat) but a very bad case of Parvo Virus. It pretty much eats away the lining of his intestines, so he can't eat or drink. Since he is only about 5 months, things don't look good. The odds are against him, so we were given two options.

1 - Hospitalize him. The vets give him IVs, antibiotics, and whatever else he will need. We hope he pulls through, and nothing else goes wrong.

2 - Put him down. Parvo, especially how bad he has it, is painful. It would be cruel to make him suffer through it without medication.

My first thought was that putting him down would be best for him. He was absolutely miserable. He couldn't eat, drink, or even move much.

I am an emotional person, when I love something I put my whole self into it. I potty trained that pain in the ass dog. I cleaned up poop/pee countless times. He is a good dog. He listens, he is good with Sophie, he doesn't rip things up, he rarely barks, and best of all - he serves as my own person foot warmer. We are giving him the chance to fight it.

He may be "just a dog," but he is our dog. I can honestly say that I never planned to spend several hundred dollars to save a pet. If he gets to stay around for a few more years, it's worth it. I'm glad we are spending the money. It breaks my heart when Sophie runs around the rooms yelling "Achilles, where are you?"

So now we keep our fingers crossed, and hope everything goes well.

MY Natural Parenting

I've never really sat down and thought, "What kind of mother am I?" I thought it was simply the norm to breastfeed whenever your baby needed it, to wake up every time your child cried at night - and then bring them into bed with you, or to give them attention when they need it.

I do what I saw my mother do with us, but I guess that just isn't how America work these days. Now formula is what everyone uses, if your kid cries at night - let them scream until they vomit, if they bug you for attention - ignore them while they "tantrum." Boy am I glad that my mom didn't raise us that way.

We:
Co-sleep
Extended Breastfing
Cloth Diaper
Attachment Parent
Baby Wear
And whatever else works for us.

We co-sleep and I love it. Even if my annoying husband tried to kick Sophie out of the bed when she was a baby, I stuck to my guns and told him to bug off. When a baby wakes up ever 1-3 hours to eat, it is sooo much easier just to plop out one of the girls and fall back asleep. I tried a few times to get up, fill a bottle with warm water, measure the formula (getting it all over the floor), mix the bottle, then try to wake up the husband so he could feed her - all the while with a screaming baby. I prefer option 1 by far.

"Well she doesn't breastfeed anymore." True, but that doesn't change the fact that she feels safe and secure in bed with us. Occasionally she'll steal my pillow, or scoot down to the bottom of the bed, but I don't mind. Whenever I had bad dreams, I would go snuggle into bed by my daddy. Not once did they wake up and tell me to go away, and I don't plan to do that to my kids. Sure, she has her own toddler bed, and I'll help ease her into it, but I won't force it.

Maybe it is just us Hispanics, but when a baby is hungry, out comes the boob. It isn't considered weird, or gross to see a mom feeding her baby. So you can see a boob, get over it. I would feed Sophie whenever she was hungry, be it here at home, with family, at a restaurant, or anywhere else. At first I would try to put a blanket over us, but it was just silly to cover her. If you have been around when Sophie was a baby, you've probably seen my boobs. She nursed for a delightful 18 months... I miss it. :(

Crying-It-Out = cruel. End of story. When Sophie actually went to sleep at a normal hour (last fall), every now and again she would fight bedtime. I'd plop her in the crib and let her cry for only 10 minutes, it was physically painful for me to just let her cry. Ask the husband, I broke to pieces a few times. After exactly 10 mintues (ok sometimes I only made it 8), I would go in and comfort her. She often fell right to sleep. Only a handful of times we had to repeat after 15 minutes of cuddles.

Even before I found "The No-Cry Sleep Solution," I wasn't uncommon for me to spend 1-2 hours getting Sophie to sleep. I wasn't upset because she wouldn't sleep, that is simply how it was for her. Eventually she learned, she grew, and sometime between 18 months and 2 years she started sleeping through the night. That's right. I got up countless times for almost 2 years. So don't complain when your newborn won't sleep until she's 2 or 3 months. I dealt with it for 2 years!

Last summer I made a stash of cloth diapers, I wanted to try them earlier, but couldn't make myself spend the insane amount of money on brand names. I have a few GDiapers on their way in the mail right now, I'm super excited. Thanks to a lovely mama of CafeMom.com. Cloth isn't gross, it is actually just like disposables. Instead of tossing out the diaper, you stick it in a pail until you wash it. Easy peasy.

I love the way we do things, and refuse to change for anyone else. While I do love attachment parenting, I don't take things to the extreme. If Sophie wants to watch "toonies" so be it. We are stuck in the house more often than not, so who cares if she watches Noggin? Her vocabulary has gone through the roof because of her shows. We eat popcorn almost every day, I'm addicted to it. I give her juice with high fructose corn syrup *GASP*, and candies, and cookies! Guess what she normally asks for though? Apples, oranges, grapes, yogurt, crackers.

Do I wear the stamp of natural parenting? Kind of, but that is ok with me. We do things that work for us, while others do things that work for them. Hopefully my kids go the same way both my mother and I have.

How To Watermark

Pictures aren't safe on the internet, it's just a fact of life. So this is for those of you who share pictures on blogs/facebook/myspace/or other whatnot. ESPECIALLY IF YOU HAVE CHILDREN!

I use a free program called Paint.Net

MAKING THE WATERMARK

Step 1 - Go to "Image" then "Canvas Size"

Adjust the measurements as such, these are the measurements I like, if you want it bigger or smaller - go ahead and make it whatever size you want.
Step 2 - Select the Eraser in your tools bar, then up the brush width.
This is what it should look like after you erase all the white.

Step 3 - Select the Paint Bucket in your tools bar. Then click "More" on your color box. (If you don't have the color box or tool bar, you can get to them by going to "Windows" at the top bar, and check marking them.)
Select the color white (or if you feel like being special, any other color), and reduce the transparency. I generally put mine around 55. It stays transparent enough, but is still visible on your pictures. Then click on your canvas to "paint" it.

If you don't want a white bar in your watermark, go ahead and skip the Step 3 all together.

Step 4 - Select the Text button on your tool bar, then pick whatever font and size you like. (Be sure to pick a different font color, I use black)
Type out whatever you want your watermark to say. Your name, your blog, your website, whatever.

Step 5 - Save it in a a place you'll remember. And LEAVE IT AS A PNG! I almost always change my pictures to JPEG out of habit, but you need to leave this one as a PNG in order to use it as a watermark.
The "Save Configuration" window will pop up. If you don't know what you are doing with it, leave it alone, and hit "OK".

USING YOUR WATERMARK

Step 1 - Open the image you want to watermark by clicking on the little folder. If you are going to resize it (Image>Resize) do that now. Then go to "Layers" and "Import From File..."
Select your saved watermark, and it will pop up like this.

Step 2 - Adjust it how you like, I just pulled the right edge so that it would cover the while width. Then dragged it down so it was centered.

Step 3 - Save it. Put it as JPEG, do NOT leave it as a Paint.net file, or you can only view it in Paint.net.
Unless you want to lower the Quality, just click "OK"
Flatten the image to make your picture and the watermark into one flat layer.

TADA! All done. :)

This is just the way I do it, I'm sure there are MANY other ways. Hope it helps.
