Revised Diapering List
So, should we make a certain GIANT purchase next month... we are going to have less play money. My play money is pretty much baby oriented. I'm a sucker for tiny things.
Remember my super awesome diaper want list.... yea... I've decided it's just more financially responsible to make the diapers myself. *tear*
So I've had to come up with a revised list of sorts. (which doesn't include any diapers) Depressing, no?
I need tiny prefolds, they are the most convenient thing for newborns that need to be changed 12 times a day.
$10 - 1 dozen preemie size prefolds (apparently I make small babies)
$18 - 1 (i really want 2) dozen newborn size prefolds
I'm going to be making most of the diaper covers from fleece, but it's nice to have a few PUL ones for out and abouts.
$11.50 Thirsties xs cover
$12.50 Thirsties newborn cover
(I want to get a pair of size small ones too, but I'm trying to be cheap here)
My goal is to use cloth wipes this time around. We tried with Sophie, but it didn't impress me. This time around I plan to use a wipe solution.
$12 baby bum drop wipes solution
I'm ok with the solid poo, you just plop it into the toilet... not the same story with breastfeeding poop. tmi? Too bad. If you have a baby, you know the stuff is like mustard. I definitely want a diaper sprayer. It hooks up to your toilet so you can spray the diapers off before tossing them in the pail.
$45 BumGenius diaper sprayer
I hated the ammonia smell that came from washing Sophie's diapers in hard water. Freaking Utah. The "Hard Rock" detergent is make specifically for hard water.
$16 Rockin Green -Hard Rock- detergent
I don't imagine the diaper smell being bad, but just in case - I'd like to get some odor helpers.
$6.50 Rockin Green pail freshener, just shake it over the stinky diaper pail (works with the detergent I want as well)
or
$6 Bummis odor remover, but this has to be sprayed on each individual diaper
With a pail, I then need a pail liner. I hate the having the diaper smell forever stick to the pail.
$15 Kissaluvs antibacterial pail liner (two would be awesome, but I think I'll make due with one)
Cloth diapers need their own special bum cream. The normal kinds make them all icky.
$16 Grandma El's diaper rash cream
Ways to close the prefolds, I've heard Snappi's are much easier than pins.
$4 Snappi (I'll need at least a few of these)
The tar poo isn't my favorite thing. You know, the stuff they make the first few days of their life. Plus going out is ok when baby pees, but I don't much want to cart poopy diapers along with me.
$6 Cutey Baby flush-able diaper liners
That's still $180.... that I don't have. :( Plus, a lot of those things only last so long, and need to be bought again. Maybe I should take up robbing banks?
I've been trying to trade with other mom's for the things that I want, but shipping adds up. I'll probably end up cutting my list down, yet again, in a few weeks. ON WITH MY QUEST OF DIAPERING!

Needs Vs. Wants
Since I am no longer blinded by my need for newborn diapers, I've been able to think of other things I should get for the baby.
Sophie was "high maintenance." She never really had great sleep, and soon got used to nursing to sleep. I read all over the internet "DO NOT LET BABY NURSE TO SLEEP," you are supposed to pop them off when they are tired and let them fall asleep. Yea.... right. Not such a lovely concept at 3 in the morning when you've only been able to sleep for 2 hrs at time all week.
I can't remember it, but Denny tells me that Sophie hated being swaddled. I honestly don't even recall swaddling her outside of the hospital, then again my brain was often running on 4 hours of sleep those first few months. With the 2nd baby, I want to try out a swaddler. I've looked at some popular blankets online, and they honestly just seem like torture. Who wants every inch of them strapped down? I mean really. Babies may be in a small area, but they can still move in the womb.
Next I definitely want to babywear. I did with Sophie, but not nearly as much as I'm going to with next baby. Sophie ALWAYS wanted to be held as a baby, so most of the time I just did things one handed. This time I'll just wrap the baby to my chest and go to town. My favorite color choices (and most affordable one I've found) come from the Sleepy Wrap.
How cool does that look? Even better... Denny can use it too! Or I can just buy him his own, he has one demand if he is to be strapped to the baby, the wrap must be nerdy. I have yet to find a nerdy wrap. :(
Also, and I am dead serious about this, I want another bed. Not a different bed, just another one to go along with ours. To either stick in Sophie's room, so I can sleep in there with the baby; or to shove against our current bed, and give us one massive bed.
It would be so convenient! That and I just really want one giant bed. :) I also don't want to have to kick Sophie out of our bed, just because another baby is on the way. It seems mean. Denny could care less really, he just wants his bed back. Maybe I'll just see if I can steal my old bed from my dad's house.
Granted I won't need one until the baby is at least sitting up, I still want a double stroller. And not one of those retarded ones, the one where the kids sit one in front of the other. I hate those. I want one where they sit side by side.
Obviously we won't be getting something like this, that is $700. Absurd for us non-rich folk. I'm hoping I can score a nice one at Kid To Kid when the need for one arises.
Our baby monitor went on the fritz last year, so we'll have to get a new one. Our Wal-Mart one did just fine, unless someone was on the same frequency. Then I would hear a baby cry at 3 in the morning, and a mans voice going to comfort the child. Scared the hell out of me the first time. I went into her room prepared to attack a grown man.
I suppose we'll just have to deal with it. Just one more thing that sucks about living in apartments.
Then I'll need all of my diapering stuff. And this list is just assuming it is a girl.
If we have a boy, I have to get bedding, clothes, all that jazz. Curse all of you who have jinxed me by saying the baby will be a boy.

Showing Off My Diaper
Instead of waking Sophie up from her nap, I let the girl sleep. The moment she woke up I changed her into the diaper. Despite it's largeness, it fits her pretty well if I snap it down a setting.
I snapped a few pictures of her while she ate some apples and watched toonies.
Then I fixed the settings on the diaper, and she wanted a photo shoot.
Don't you love that grin? :) Her eyes were green today.
She wanted "more picture Sophie Mommy".
Look at me- no makeup, didn't shower, unplucked eyebrows, no bra, my roots are in desperate need of dying... I could pass for a hippie. :P
She put her blanket over her horse, then rode it.
Just felt like showing off my diaper some more :) Carry on.

First NIGHT in cloth
This was too exciting for me not to share (probably not exciting for you, but I don't care).
Last night was our first night using a cloth diaper instead of a disposable. Being as we dove into cloth a year ago, you would think I would have tried this sooner. I had two problems with nighttime: 1 Sophie still had a sippy at night (to make up for the lack of boob). 2 With the liquid, came the pee. And I only had fitted diapers (they didn't pull moisture away from her bum, so if she a wet one too long, it would cause a rash).
Problem 1 is still valid, kinda. She has a juice box at night, but hardly ever asks for it. Problem 2 = solved! Fleece is water resistant and serves as a dry barrier between bum and pee. Wahoo!
I felt like experimenting last night, so I put her in her Bum Genius with both the insert and booster stuffed inside. She fell asleep at 8:30 (it was delightful) and woke up a good deal to ask for her juice box. We never go to bed that early so it was hard for her to stay asleep. I half expected her to pee her way out of the diaper, but let her be.
We woke up at 9:30 and I took off her diaper. IT FELT DRY! I know she peed, the kid drank like a horse last night. The inserts absorbed so well that even they felt mostly dry. I have the sudden urge to go steal a cart full of these from the Quilted Bear. Lucky for the Quilted Bear, I have no car today... :(

Cloth Diapers
Most of you know that we began our cloth diapering endeavor last spring/summer. I started by making about 15 pocket diapers from the Rita Rump pattern. We also had a dozen or so of prefolds. I was still iffy, but decided making them was better than forking our a couple $100 for a stash. The diapers worked wonderfully, and we did use them the majority of the time. We went from $40 a month on disposables to about $10. We only used them at night, so one pack lasted us a month.
Eventually I had to rebel. Washing the diapers wasn't bad, it was the folding and stuffing that would kill my arms. I had to fold 15 microfiber cloths, then stuff them into 15 pocket diapers, then fold 15 diapers. Every now and again I would forget my cloths and just use disposables for a while.
Then about a month ago I started looking at actual brand name diapers. The reason I never used cloth when we go out for a long time, or at night, is because the diaper I have do not pull the moisture away from Sophie's skin. They absorb wonderfully, but if she sits in the diaper for any real length of time, she'd get a rash. Rashes = Hell.
I am a fan of CafeMom.com. There are a few cloth diapering groups on there, so I joined them. There are sections where moms post diapers that they want to sell or trade, lucky me a lady was get rid of some brand spankin' new gDiapers. I've coveted gDiapers since Sophie was about a year old, I just didn't have it in me to spend $17 on one diaper. So I jumped right on that opportunity.
At first I wasn't too use about them, because the little inside snaps left marks on Sophie's hips. Simple fix - most to the next size up. I was trying to have her wear mediums, since logically she fits into the weight range. Silly me. Now that I put her in larges, I adore them. These are the diapers that she wears during the day. I like them because you don't have to change the cover every time she goes potty. Instead you just change out the insert, and since I'm super cheap I didn't even buy the "proper" inserts - I use prefolds.
But alas, they won't work for night time. Since I don't have inserts that would pull the moisture away from her bum, she would get a rash. That is where our BumGenious comes in! It pulls the moisture flawlessly. Sadly, I only have one. So once I get my hands on a few more, you can bet that we'll make the change to all cloth. Slowly but surely! :)
*Now on a related side note, there is a cloth diaper give away going on at The Cloth Diaper Whisperer. It is the 9th anniversary, so they are giving away 9 diapers. :) Now I have yet to ever win a giveaway, but one can hope. Plus, cloth is awesome.*

Low Down On Cloth
So after finishing a dozen or so diapers, I decided to try them out. I must say that I am a fan. First off, I am not a crazy hippie eco nut. My choice to cloth diaper was not to save the environment. While I won't go punch a baby tree for kicks, I don't really go out of my way to save the earth. I do things because I am my mothers child, she taught me never pay for anything I can find cheaper, or do myself.
We went through 4 diapers today, from this morning until bath time at 7:30. I only put a cover on her when we went out and about. Even without the covers, none of the diapers leaked. Success!
Here is the first diaper cover I made, obviously not perfect, but functional. Plus it was made from an old blanket. :) Yay for saving money! Anyways, on to the diapering plan.
I pre-stuff all the diapers with microfiber towels, and stack them under her changing table. Right before I put them on, I plop in a piece of scrap fabric. (this acts as a liner for poo, that way I don't have to wash poo off the diapers) After pinning on a few diapers, I have only stabbed myself once. Wahoo!
Once its time for the diaper to come off, I pull out the microfiber towel, and toss everything into a garbage can. Our 'diaper pail' is sitting in our bathroom closet. Once I run out of diapers I'll get to washing them, hopefully I'll make enough that I only have to do diapers once or twice a week. Since I don't throw poo in with the diapers, smell shouldn't be a big problem.
(for washing you use 1/4 the amount of detergent reccomended, and no fabric softener. wash on hot, and sun dry, or toss in the dryer.)
I find these to be rather nice. So if anyone can sew, and would like to knew the patterns, hit me up. Or if you would like to buy some, I could sew some up a few for ya. :) If I like you that is. :P

I Finished A Diaper! :D
Beautiful isn't it? I have oodles that haven't been completely finished, but this one is :) The above picture is the outer (left) and inner (right) fabric of the diaper. It is made of flannel so its super soft.Friday, June 5, 2009
Cloth Diapers
Before Sophie was born, Denny mentioned cloth diapers. I looked at him like he had lost his mind. My mind instantly flashed to olden days with a big piece of cloth, a big ass safety pin, and hand washing poop. No thank you! I told him he was insane, and the matter wasn't brought up again.
After Sophie turned one, I stumbled upon cloth diapers on ebay. (I have an addiction to ebay) I spent a few days learning about them, and to my surprise, they weren't that bad. Besides the fact that they are about $15-$20 a pop, they would save oodles of money in the long run.
Right now we spend about $40 a month on diapers, that's $480 a year, and if the kid is in diapers for 3 years that's $1,440... do you know how many other things I could buy with that?!?
I eventually forgot about the cloth diapers, because we just didn't have the money at the time. Last week I came across them again. This time it was a group of women that sew their own. I spent a good week looking up everything I would need to know. I've decided to make some.
Aren't they cute? They can be used on itty bitty babies all the way up to 30 lb toddlers. The best part, they will survive through baby two and three! If Sophie stays in diapers until shes 3, then I use them on the two other kids of 3 years... thats a grand total savings of $3,640... I'LL TAKE IT!
I've already started cutting out fabric, so I'll be sure to post some pictures once I get a few finished. I think I may even sell some. They are super easy to make. Wish me luck!
(Denny informed me that I forgot to mention "how awesomely right he was." So here it is, props to my hubs. You were right. :P Happy now?)
